Tip: copy columns from Excel (tons, CV, inherent moisture, ash, volatiles, fixed carbon, sulphur, surface moisture) and paste into any Tons cell. Leave a cell blank if that analysis isn't available; the blend is then calculated from the products that have it.

Blend quality

Blend to target

Find the share of two products that meets a specification. Quality is assumed to blend linearly by mass.

Method

Each blend analysis is the tonnage-weighted average of the product analyses. Total moisture = surface moisture + inherent moisture × (1 − surface moisture/100). Gross CV as received = CV (ad) × (100 − total moisture) / (100 − inherent moisture).

With the air-dried option on, air-dried analyses are weighted by each product's air-dried mass, tons × (100 − TM)/(100 − IM), which is more exact when surface moistures differ.

Blend to target

For two products with qualities qA and qB, the share of A that gives target qT is (qT − qB) / (qA − qB). The target must lie between the two products.

Limitations

Proximate analyses, CV and sulphur blend close to linearly by mass. Ash fusion temperatures, swelling and Hardgrove index do not, so test those on the actual blend. Net (NAR) CV needs hydrogen content and is not calculated.
